If You're Interested in Woodworking as a Hobby, Read This

by Paul Cameron

Woodworking covers a variety of processes, such as cabinetmaking, joinery, marquetry, turning, and woodcarving. Nevertheless, all expert craftspeople have had to learn the fundamental techniques of marking, measuring, dimensioning, assembling and finishing. These skills are the fundamentals of woodworking and are the nitty-gritty of woodworking, be it hobby or profession.

The capability to conceptualize three dimensionally is necessary to mark up the wood and to envisage how one piece fits with another and in what order. Also, you need to figure out which tools will produce the best final result, taking into consideration the precision required and the attributes of the wood.

The procedure of cutting down the wood precisely to size is known as dimensioning - a process that's straightforward in theory but takes much repetition to hone. All except the most basic of woodworking projects call for cutting and putting together an assortment of joints. Traditionally, joinery is considered to be the true test of a woodworker's expertise, since it requires hand-eye coordination that never wavers. However, practice will help you discover the most effective means to secure one section of wood to another appealingly and inconspicuously without giving up durability.

An essential add-on to these fundamental abilities is a perception of how wood performs. It's a one of a kind, living object that swells and shrinks with shifts in humidity, an issue that a woodworker has to address in the planning and building of each item. There are woods that are easier to work with than others, and every piece of wood, no matter what type it is, has distinct twists and turns in its grain.

There isn't one correct method to do anything in woodworking. The best method is the one that suits you the most, and strikes a balance between the time required to complete the project, the tools at hand, the satisfaction you receive from the activity and the desired quality of the finished product.

Their are lots of reasons for and against using either machines or hand tools in woodworking. There are those who will insist that hand tools help you to learn how to cut and form wood while keeping the grain intact. Other woodworking experts claim that it's often possible to finish a project in less time using hand tools due to the preparation involved in using mechanical tools. Some others believe the total opposite.

With some patience, the right tools and techniques, and a good plan, you might just end up creating a treasure that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

Making Aromatherapy Candles

Aromatherapy is one of the biggest selling markets today.  Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that can be used in conjunction with other types of stress relief.  Aromatherapy candles have found their way into many homes, businesses, and alternative health practices. Aromatherapy candles are an excellent way to open up your senses and relieve stress.

Necessary Supplies

Before we begin to make these wonderful candles let us look at what equipment and supplies will be needed.

First you will need essential oils.  Essential oils are obtained from plants using a specific method of distillation.  Essential oils can be very expensive.  The good thing about essential oils is that it only takes a small amount to produce the aroma that you want for your candle.  Some people like to mix these essential oils to make a scent of their own. For now we will stick with just one basic essential oil.  Bergamot is an essential oil used for tension and stress.  It is also an essential oil that is used to help as an antidepressant because it is an uplifting effect.

The type of candle, whether it is a soy or paraffin, will determine the equipment needed. In this article we will show how to make a soy aromatherapy candle using the essential oil for the fragrance. You will need a measuring bowl made of glass to melt your wax, potholders to hold the wax when removing it from the microwave, a spoon, soap, water, a container, essential oil, and dye if desired. You will also need a wick, hot glue gun, and a pencil.

Creating Your Aromatherapy Candle

You are now ready to begin your journey on making your first aromatherapy candle.  Let us take a take a look at wicks.  The wick that you use for your aromatherapy candle can directly effect how your candle burns.  Not all wicks are created equal.  Always purchase the size wick that you need according to the diameter of your candle that you will be crafting.

Now, gather all your supplies and equipment. Place the appropriate amount of soy chip wax into the measuring cup.  To know the amount of wax that you will need you will need to know the capacity of the container that you are putting your aromatherapy candle in.  You can start with a small amount of soy wax chips and add more until you reach the desired amount of melted wax.

While the wax is melting prepare your container by using hot glue to attach the metal portion of the wick to the inside of the container.  Use the pencil with a small amount of the wick wrapped around it to hold the wick in the middle.  Secure the pencil to prevent movement while pouring the wax. Remove the melted wax carefully from the microwave to prevent burns.  Try adding a few drops of essential oil to your melted wax.  It is better to have little than to have too much. That way, when your candle burns, the fragrance does not overwhelm the person that it is for.  This is the experimental part of aromatherapy and most sources do not agree on the amount to use.

Once the oil is in the melted soy wax, mix well and pour into your container.  Be sure the wick is centered after pouring.

For aromatherapy candles using a less decorative glass or tin as the holder will help the person using the candle to concentrate on the aroma and not just on how the container looks.  You now have a beautiful candle that is a wonderful gift to share.  If your candle aroma is not right the first time you may have to experiment with the use of the essential oils to get it right.  Don’t give up; you will create the perfect aromatherapy candle.  Remember, mixing the oils is one way to create your own special aroma.

Doll Carriages - Fascinating Objects to Play with or Display

Doll carriages are a dollhouse accessory. These are carriages for dolls that can be pushed around quite like a baby carriage or perambulator. These are good things for children to play with. They can move around their dolls on the carriages. Sometimes, the doll carriage can even be big enough to carry a child on it. So, children can playfully carry each other on these carriages quite like dolls.

Doll carriage types

The doll carriages can come in a variety of styles and designs and can make use of different materials. There are the popular wooden doll carriages which resemble pushcarts and are strong enough to carry children too. So, children can push around each other on the doll carriage just like they do with the dolls. There are many providers of doll carriages who make the carriages extra wide to ensure stability. Children can turn the wooden doll carriage into a multi use vehicle using their imagination too. So, the doll carriage can become a tractor, a stroller and a lawn mower also during play. Thus, the single toy, the doll carriage, can take over the roles of several toys.

Some doll carriages are there that make pleasant sounds when moved around. These are much in demand. There may be plastic or wooden horses attached to the doll carriages to give a real carriage feel. Floral prints may also be used for decorating the carriage beautifully. Special doll carriages that resemble Cinderella’s carriage can be obtained to accompany dolls representing characters of the Cinderella tale. There are also on offer a variety of doll carriage accessories like the doll carriage cushions, curtains etc. which seek to spruce up the doll carriages and make them look all the more true to the fairy tales.

Resistance to tipping- important doll carriage safety feature

Just like in case of baby carriages it is important for doll carriages to also be resistant to tipping. A durable construction of the doll carriage is important too in order to ascertain that it can withstand years of intense and varied play and can resist the strains of both indoor and outdoor usage.

It can be said that the beautiful dollhouses- castles, palaces etc. seem quite incomplete without the elegant doll carriages accompanying them. So, dollhouse owners need to try and secure suitable doll carriages from the wide variety of designer doll carriages on offer. These will not only make the dollhouses look complete in all respects but also provide an item of great fascination for children to play with.

Birdwatching Or Birding Which One Is A Hobby With A Cause?

Birder's have long contested birdwatching as a hobby, by saying the two are completely different. Birdwatching  is a hobby that is done as an activity during recreation,  but birder's are more intense  and dedicated to there cause.

The Birder's

Whether it be in the United States or any where else in the world, what birder's are saying is what they do so is far removed from just a pastime or a relaxation thing. For them they do it to study not only the species of birds but also their patterns of migration. they do not base there research on just observations, and they always invest in the most modern up to date optical equipment to strengthen their claims.

They no not normally visit popular birdwatching sites, what birder's are looking for is new and unexplored sites, this way they hope to find more new information. They budget for there travel and it does matter how far it may take them to gain fresh new knowledge about there passion birds.

The Birdwatchers

These people go birdwatching only to observe with there eyes or a pair of binoculars and are not normally in to the technology side of things. It would not bother them if the equipment they use is the most modern or up to date available to them on the market. What is important to birdwatchers is the sense of fulfillment they get from what they are doing. There main aim is to relax, see the birds and enjoy the sights.

For birdwatchers it will not matter to them where they observe birds. To them there own garden is good enough for them, or they even may travel to a nature reserve close to them. These people have a love for birds but do not wish to go any further with there study of birds than just watching them

The Right Time

Birdwatching in country's that have four season is normally most active in the spring and fall migrations. During this time, there are a large amount of birds to be seen. This is because the birds are relocating northbound or southbound in trying to find nesting sites.

The best time to do any observing is early morning when the birds are looking for food. Starting early in the morning also gives you a longer day to do to any observing.

Sea watching

Birdwatching of this type is all about people who go near coastal areas to do there observing. It can also be done when one is aboard a seagoing vessel.  The birds that can be observed from such are called the pelagic kind. The pelagic species of birds are normally just observed in coastal areas.

The Proper Etiquette

Wether you be a bird watcher or a birder, it should always be your main priority to look out for the wellbeing of the birds, also it is good practice to take some form of notes on your observations. You you always protect the environment so any natural habitat will not be harmed. Also when you use any of the latest technology that is available too you, then you will need to make sure it will not affect the birds in a negative manner.

Birdwatching may just be a hobby to some people,  but to most it is a hobby that must be done with passion and concern about the birds and their welfare.

Birdwatching Optics-How To Find Them

Birdwatching is a passion and starts with the simple idea of observing the different kinds of species of birds. But as the years have progressed and technology develops, more and more bird watching optics have become available on the market and your goal should be to find which one is the best to suit your needs.

If you would like know how a person normally starts to become an avid birdwatcher, first, they have a love for nature and are curious about birds, so much so, that they would go out of their way to be able to see some and then see some more until the hobby becomes a passion in there life.

You can start in your own backyard, observing the birds that fly through your garden. Then you could start feeding the birds so that they would stay longer, thus, giving you more time to observe them. An ideal way to do this is with the use of bird feeders and bird baths. To protect the welfare of the birds, you could also plant trees as well as shrubs and also this provides excellent nesting areas.

Now that you already have a passion for birdwatching, you should look in to the optics that are available in to days market. These optics will enhance your watching experience, you will also see the birds more clearly. Also this will take your observing towards the scientific route.

Binoculars are usually the first item that birders invest in. The more expensive ones, of course, are better. Usually these come with better vision, precise configuration and alignment and easy to navigate controls, which are ideal for the beginner

With so many types available on the market these days, you could well find yourself confused about what can be the right purchase for you. If you find yourself in this dilemma, all you got to do is ask. Ask people with more experience and who have already been birdwatching for longer than you. If you can not find somebody, then search the internet. The internet you will find has all the information you need to know about birding and bird watching and the optics that you must have in order to become successful with your hobby.

You should look closely at the features of the binoculars before you purchase a pair of them. Choose the right weight by holding them and feel if you are comfortable doing so. Remember that once you have purchased them, you will be holding them most of the time. Also, you should see through them while you are still in the store to know if they are perfect fit for your eyes. Look at the lenses closely, navigate through the controls. You could also ask what are the accessories are available. This way, birding would be more fun now that you have a new pair of binoculars with you.

The scopes are normally for advanced users. They are is purchased with a tripod. The lenses would be your utmost concern when it comes to this. Inspect those closely before you buy one, as they are the most important aspect of these.

There are a lot of other optics available to you, that you could try once you have mastered the use of binoculars and scopes. It varies from night vision, infrared, cameras to photograph or record your observations. You could even use video among the many other choices open to you.

Birdwatching optics are there to help you find the right view and enhance your watching experience. When you have purchased your optics, all you need to be mindful about is where you could find the right spot to use them.

WARMACHINE Explained

Made by Privateer Press, WARMACHINE is a table top miniatures war game made by Privateer Press. And yes, WARMACHINE is supposed to be in all caps. Primarily a skirmish-level game, it's usually played with anywhere from half a dozen to forty models. However, you can certainly play even more models if you want to. At the center of the game is a powerful leader called a Warcaster who can empower and manipulate the hulking Warjack steam-punk mecha. This core battlegroup gets help from a widely diverse bunch of troops, including anything from undead pirates to fire bomb chucking zealots to disciplined riflemen.

The Rules

Game rules are well-written to be very clear and concise. Most of the rules you need are in the main rulebook, called Prime: Remix. Models also come with stat cards that give a rundown on all of their special rules and how they work. That makes it easy to keep tabs on all your (and your opponent’s) cool tricks mid-battle. One good thing is the fact Privateer Press has avoided doing one edition after another. Because of this, it makes it a very friendly game on the wallet since you aren’t forced to buy and re-buy a half-dozen rulebooks every few years. Since new books are released annually and have a little something for every faction, you’ll also never be left in the cold for years waiting and hoping for an army update.

Gameplay

Gameplay itself is very fast-paced and in-your-face, and definitely favors the aggressor. That fact makes the game much more interesting as you don’t wind up with two sides facing off too scared to make a move all game. The sequential unit activation setup of the game also allows you to execute a myriad display of nasty combos to bring ULTIMATE PAIN to your unfortunate foes. But that’s ok, because they can do it right back to you, keeping each battle fresh and exciting. Victory can be, and often is, snatched from the jaws of defeat should the apparent victor leave an opening for the beleaguered underdog.

The focus on the game is also a lot less on list-building and more on mid-battle tactics. Each model’s abilities are set in stone, leaving list construction to be simply putting the building blocks together. That doesn't mean it's simplistic however, since you need to account for each unit’s special abilities and how they’ll work with the rest of the army on the field. Even changing nothing more then the single warcaster model you have leading the army can change it’s entire dynamic, making it a simple matter to liven up your game with something new.

WARMACHINE As A Hobby

Hobby-wise you don’t see as much model conversion as in a lot of other games, mostly because anything you might need a model for either already has one, or will have one released within the year. Painting is big, with a lot of pro tips in the various source books. As with any table top miniatures war game, terrain building is part of the hobby.

WARMACHINE In A Nutshell

WARMACHINE is a fast-paced, in-your-face style game with a quirky steam punk / magical setting where you can pull off insanely broken moves of ULTIMATE PAIN on your opponent. But be careful, cause he can do the same to you when you least expect it, keeping the game fresh and fun to the climactic end.

Beading Ideas for Fun Beading Projects

Beading is a great way to show your creativity. And some beading projectscan be very easy to implement. You can easily create your own beaded ascessories. Here are several important beading tips for beginner beaders that help you plan your project properly and make your beading projects easier and more fun.

1 Remember - spacing your beads makes your project look professional

Majority of beading projects that include small beads especially semi-precious, Swarovski, glass and pearl beads require a spacer between them. You have two options - make a simple knot between your beads, or insert a decorative spacer. I prefer spacers, because they make the design more interesting. It is best to use silver or gold spacers with expensive beads - they won't loose the shine as they age.

2 Use a beading board

Before putting your beads on a wire lay the beads you are planning to use out on a jewelry layout board. You can buy these boards in any shop that sells, craft supplies, beads and beading tools. The board lets you see, how your design will work before you connect everything. If you don't have a board, use a plain light bath towel, so your beads don't scatter.

3 Don't allow your beads escape you, especially if you use expensive beading material

Even if you use a beading board, it is a good idea to cover the table you work on with a towel. Beads rolling all over the table can drive you crazy, but a towel will prevent it. Also, if you have a cat, cover your work with another towel, if you leave even for a few minutes. My cat can destroy hours of work in less then 30 seconds.

4 Start with a piece of string longer than you need

If you are going to use knots, then cut the string 4 times longer than finished project plus a few extra inches, otherwise 2 times longer. Also you can fold your string twice or even four times, to make it stronger. This is particularly true if you use heavy glass beads and large beads.

5 Do you know that there are colored strings available - don't use white

Your don't always have to use white string, buy a string that matches the color of your beads for this project. If you can't find a string in that particular shade, take a white one and dye it, you don't need to use an expensive special die - use kids markers instead.

6 Be careful - strings stretch

In my first beaded necklaces I always had this problem - you finish a necklace, than after a day of wearing it the string stretches and beads are no longer tight together, looks awful. To avoid this, after all the beads are on, hang your necklace for a day or so, than do the final knotting or attach clasps.

7 Be careful, when hiding the ends of your work

Final knots are important, it is best to use square knots and tighten them firmly. Then apply some jewelers glue to your knots and only after that cut the loose ends

8 Be kind to your eyes

Beading for several hours can give you a bad eye strain, especially if you are working with seed beads. So always have a good light on, a desk lamp is best. A tool that can also make your work easy is a magnifying glass for beading. It will also help keep your project neat and help to avoid small mistakes.

Tatiana Turner is a publisher of Beading Patterns.org where you can find beading designs and everything you need to know about beading
